Southwest and its subsidiary AirTran have rolled fare sales in which what customers pay is based on how far they fly.

Flights of 450 miles or less are on sale for $35 each way – or less than $95 round-trip, even when taxes and fees are included.

For flights between 451 and 1,000 miles, sale fares are $65 each way (plus taxes and fees).

That jumps to $95 each way for flights of 1,001 to 1,500 miles and tops out at $125 each way for flights of more than 1,500 miles.

The sale fares must be booked by the end of the day Thursday but are good for travel from Nov. 30 through Dec. 14 and from Jan. 4 through Feb. 15.

The sale fares are available on all days of the week except Sundays. The number of seats sold at the sale fares are limited, though there appeared to be broad availability for the discounted prices.

Major rivals did not appear to be matching Southwest and AirTran's sale fares (as of 8:45 a.m. ET) on most routes, though they have lowered their fares to compete during previous Southwest-led sales.

As for Southwest/AirTran, here are sample round-trip fares (including taxes and fees):

450 miles or less: Atlanta-Memphis, $87; Los Angeles-Las Vegas, $88; Baltimore-Boston, $91; Chicago Midway-Minneapolis/St. Paul, $91; Akron-New York LaGuardia, $91

451-1,000 miles: Houston-St. Louis, $150; Oakland-Seattle, $151; Atlanta-Kansas City, $151; Denver-Portland (Ore.), $151; Portland (Maine)-Baltimore, $151; Indianapolis-Orlando, $151.

1,001-1,500 miles: Las Vegas-Little Rock, $211; Boston-St. Louis, $211; Charleston (S.C.)-Denver, $231; Newark-Tulsa, $231.

More than 1,500 miles: Milwaukee-Seattle, $225; Columbus (Ohio)-San Diego ($291); San Antonio-Albany (N.Y.), $293; Detroit-San Juan (Puerto Rico), $310.
